as long asとas far as の意味と使い方の違い

as long as , as far as はどちらも『～する限り』と日本語に訳しますが、意味と使い方が異なります。

しっかりと意味の違いを覚えて、正しく使えるようにしましょう。

as long as , as far as どちらにも接続詞、同等比較として使うことが出来ます。まずは接続詞から見て行きましょう。

接続詞 as long as には２つの意味があります。

１．時間の範囲『～している間は』

used to say that one thing will continue if another thing happens at the same time.
『他のことが同時に起きていれば、そのことが続く』

＜例文＞
I will not forget you as long as I am alive.
『生きている間は、あなたのことは忘れません』

Please stay as long as you wish.
『あなたが望んでいる間は、居て良いですよ（どうぞごゆっくり）』

２．条件の範囲『～ならば』

used to say that one thing can happen if another thing happens
『他のことが起これば、そのことが起きる』

＜例文＞
You can have a cat as long as you promise to take care of it.
『しっかり世話をする約束するならば、猫を飼っても良いよ。』

Any hotel will do as long as the cost is low.
『費用が安ければ、どのホテルでも大丈夫です。』

接続詞 as far as の意味は、『ある範囲においては』という意味です。

used to say that an idea, suggestion, plan etc is satisfactory, but only to a limited degree
『ある程度の範囲において、アイデアや程度、計画などが満足できること』

これだけでは分かりにくいですよね。いくつか例文を見て行きましょう。

＜例文＞
As far as I know, he is a engineer.
『私の知る限りでは、彼はエンジニアです』

As far as I remember, he smoked.
『私が覚えている限りでは、彼はタバコを吸っていた』

As far as I am concerned, this is the best way.
『私に言わせれば、これが一番良い方法です』

As far as I can tell, he was not happy here.
『私が言えるのは、彼はここに満足していなかったってこと。』

There was nothing but the ocean as far as the eye could see.
『見渡す限り海だった』

as ～ as 　～に形容詞か副詞を入れることで『同じ～』という意味になります。～には long も far も入れることが出来ます。

A is as long as B『AはBと同じ長さです』

A is as far as B『AはBと同じ距離です』

です。

＜例文＞
This pen is as long as that one.
『このペンはあのペンと同じ長さ』

The distance between my and the station is as far as my house and my company.
『家から駅までの距離と家から会社までの距離は同じです。』
