他の部署の人と協力してプロジェクトを進めたり、複数の実験を同時に進めることがあると思います。そのような状況を説明するときに使える表現が side by side です。一緒に、同時に、平行して という意味で使います。
英英辞典でｲﾓを調べてみると調べてみると
１．next to each other （隣同士）
例文＞
The two building stand side by side. (2つの建物が並んで立っている）
２．they work together to achieve something（何かを達成するために一緒に働く）
例文＞
The engineer and the sales rep. worked side by side to find a new customer.(技術者と営業担当者は新しい顧客を探すために一緒に働いた）
３．they exist in the same place or at the same time, even though this may seem difficult or surprising（難しいと、驚くべきことに、複数のものが同じ場所、時間に存在している）

The traditional and the modern exist side by side in TOKYO.（東京には、伝統的なものと近代的なものが共存している）
